The management of AJUSA waste

Posted by Ajusa: February 22th, 2017

The quality of a company also measures up for its commitment to the environment. AJUSA has the ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems certification and surrenders anually to exhaustive external audits to verify that it complies with the parameters of environmental quality that are monitored in the mentioned norm.A company like AJUSA generates 400 tons of non-dangerous waste and 15 tons of dangerous waste a year. The environment department of the company manages this waste: it separates, stores and looks for an authorized company. The company is in charge of recycling the waste.

A company like AJUSA generates 400 tons of non-dangerous waste and 15 tons of dangerous waste a year. The environment department of the company manages this waste: it separates, stores and looks for an authorized company. The company is in charge of recycling the waste.

As we have specified in the previous paragraph, we can classify the industrial waste generated by AJUSA in non-dangerous (paperboard, plastic, wood, scrap, garbage, etc.) and dangerous (oils, taladrines, polluted containers, polluted rags, polluted water…). However, we can also catalog them by their origin: solid, liquid, gas and acoustic. In the case of noise pollution, the machines that make the most noise, such as die cutting, operate in isolated rooms and the workers use helmets to protect themselves from this pollution. For the control of the gas waste, it is necessary to adapt suction hoods on the machines which at the same time are connected to a network of ducts and a chimney. The chimney has a filter that cleans the gases emitted to the outside according to the environmental regulations stipulated in each province so that the impact on the environment is minimal.

This is the first step for the waste management. The solid waste (paperboard, plastic, wood, glasses, scraps, rubbish or empty containers) need to be classified and stored every day. In AJUSA, the production processes that are especially polluting and that generate more waste are those of coatings and machining (camshafts and hydraulic lifters).

The liquid waste need special care because because they are very dangerous. Solvents, polluted water, oils or taladrines are stored in classified drums. The residues that take remains of solvents (sludge, rags, containers ...) are considered the most harmful. In other cases, for example, the regulation demands to cover and to close the machines that work with spray painting.

The environmental control not only is applied to the management and recycling of the generated waste. It also requires a thorough examination of the materials that enter in the company for its use and saving. Let’s take an example to understand it better. AJUSA applies a specific policy to avoid energy wastes, such as heating. Facilities are isolated not to lose heat and also Ajusa keeps the appropriate measures to the activity that is developed in the company: 21ºC in offices and 18ºC in factory. Turn off the computer at the end of the working day or install the lights of the presence in the toilets other measures that are applied in AJUSA to avoid wasting energy.

Once classified, the AUTHRIZED WASTE COMPANIES by the Council of Environment of Castilla La Mancha pick up weekly the non-dangerous waste and, every six months the dangerous ones. Most of them are recyclable. Example of paper, copper, glass or rubber. The ISO certification 14001 requires a warehouse with special characteristics to store waste until it is picked up. The recycling and AJUSA’s commitment with the environment is an important part of the excellence of our production chain.
